This 90-year-old team preceded the National Basketball Association! Can you believe it? They were the original ball-trotting team and entertained basketball fans way before the NBA ever came to light. The Harlem Globetrotters were initially known as the Savoy Five. Fantastic Black American athletes entertained the crowd right before a dance performance in the Southside of Chicago. They were utilized by the Savoy Ballroom to bring in attendees – they're a basketball act entertaining the crowd right before a dance number! After leaving the Savoy Five, the athletes made a new team called the Harlem Globetrotters. By 1929, they were touring North America and entertaining fans one city at a time. The performers within the Globetrotters are not just your ordinary entertainers. They are actually exemplary athletes with amazing skills. In fact, the first black NBA player, Chuck Cooper, was a former member of the Globetrotters. In 1950, he made history as the first African-American player to sign with the NBA.

Today, the Harlem Globetrotters has grown into a worldwide touring sensation. The team has performed over 26,000 exhibition games and traveled to over 124 countries. Their unique theater and comedy-style presentations have made audiences laugh and cheer with the players’ incredible skills. Today, the roster ranges from 6’7’ feet tall athletes to feisty 4’5” players. Jahmani “Mini Michael” Swanson may not be taller than five feet, but what he lacks in height, he makes up with incredible basketball skills. The inclusivity of the Harlem Globetrotters has broken barriers and diversified its rosters – making it an excellent entertainment for all types of audiences.
